As a UWA India student, you’ll use your UWA login (UWA ID) to securely access all the important UWA systems. Ensure to set up Multi-Factor Authentication to keep your login secure, and check your UWA student email regularly.

UWA ID

The University has one primary login; UWA ID, which is in the format of studentnumber@student.uwa.edu.au. If you are a new student, you will need to activate your new network account and create your UWA ID.

  1. During the activation process you will be asked for your student number and your date of birth.
  2. Choose 'I agree' after you have read the terms and conditions.
  3. You will then be asked to choose and enter two 'challenge questions and answers'. A challenge question and answer is a useful level of security that uses personally meaningful information.
  4. To easily reset your password, you will need to know your challenge questions and their answers.
  5. A challenge answer is not case sensitive, but it must be six or more characters long and may contain letters, numbers, spaces and special characters.
  6. After entering your challenge questions and their answers, scroll down to the next fields on the screen where you must create a password. This password must be an 8-character combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.
  7. Press the Submit button to activate your UWA ID account.
  8. Once you have logged in and updated your password, follow the documented steps to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

The University requires you to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to protect your UWA ID account. Access the MFA set up instructions.

Cyber attacks increasingly target passwords through phishing, password reuse and other techniques designed to gain access to accounts.

MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than just your password when signing in. This helps protect your UWA ID account, even if your password is compromised.

Passkeys are a newer, more secure form of MFA that use your device's built-in security, such as a fingerprint, face recognition or PIN, instead of a one-time code. Passkeys are more resistant to phishing attacks and are becoming the preferred way to protect online accounts.

At UWA India, we recommend using a passkey wherever possible to provide the highest level of protection for your account.

How MFA and passkeys work
When you sign in to a UWA service, the exact experience will depend on the authentication methods you have registered.
Traditional MFA typically involves:
  1. Entering your UWA ID username and password.
  2. Completing an additional verification step, such as:
               • approving a notification in an authentication app
                • entering a verification code.
Passkeys provide a simpler and more secure sign-in experience. In many cases, you only need to enter your username and then verify your identity using the following options:
  • a fingerprint
  • facial recognition
  • a device PIN
  • a security key.
For your protection, additional verification may occasionally be required when signing in from a new device, browser or location, or after making changes to your account security settings.
Managing your MFA and passkeys
If you've replaced your phone, purchased a new computer or want to add a backup authentication method, use the guides below.
You can update your authentication methods at any time to ensure you can continue accessing your account if you lose access to a device.
MFA for your UWA ID account
Follow these steps to manage your existing MFA setup for your UWA ID account:

Student email

All students with an active UWA ID are automatically assigned an email address. It is important that you check this email address regularly as it will be used by the University for official correspondence with you, including:

  • information about your fees and enrolment
  • examination information
  • notices from the Library, including overdue items and fines
  • communications from lecturers and tutors
  • many other purposes.
Student WebMail
UWA login (UWA ID)
The University has one primary login; UWA ID, which is in the format of studentnumber@student.uwa.edu.au. Your password will be initially set when you accept your offer and activate your UWA ID account.
Student email addresses
Your email address will be in the format of: studentnumber@student.uwa.edu.au. By default, the display name of your email will display to all students and staff as your first name and last name followed by your student number in brackets, e.g. "Sam Citizen (12345678)".
Leaving UWA or deferring your studies
Your access to student email is affected if you leave the University or defer your enrolment, and after you complete your course.
  • Deferred: You will retain access until you can no longer legally enrol in that course.
  • Approved leave: You can retain access while not studying for a maximum of three years.
  • Withdrawing: You will lose access within 28 days from the end of your enrolment.
  • Cancelled course: You will lose access within 28 days from the course termination.
  • Lapsed enrolment: You will lose access within 28 days from the end of your enrolment.
  • Completed course: You will lose access 12 months from when you complete your course. Note: this is not the day you pass your exams, or your graduation day, but the day where your course status is recorded as completed. This means you will not be able to access your UWA student email account or collaboration tools after this time and access cannot be restored.
If you wish to keep a copy of your emails and files, you will need to organise this before your access expires.
For your email mailbox, use Outlook from Office 365 Software to Export all Emails, Contacts and Calendar items.
For your files, download (or sync) your files down to your PC or Mac before your access expires.
You may wish to notify your contacts that you will no longer be contactable on your UWA email address before your access expires. Consider either:
  • composing an email to your contacts letting them know of an alternative email address
  • setting up an 'Out of office' response with your new contact details – instructions on doing this are available.
Note: the out-of-office response will cease working once your access expires.

Software and applications

UWA India's virtual desktop is available to all UWA India students and staff, providing access to most UWA coursework applications for your studies.

Connectivity and Wi-Fi

UWA India staff and current students can access the UWA India Wi-Fi network for free and connect up to three devices at any one time.

Students must have an active UWA ID account and agree to the terms and conditions of internet access in their UWA ID account settings in order to use UWA India's Wi-Fi.

The username and password for the Wi-Fi network are your UWA student or staff number and UWA ID password.
