UWA’s India Expansion marks a transformative chapter in global education collaboration
National, 7th October 2025: As the next phase of the University of Western Australia’s (UWA) long term investment commitment to India and after the University Grants Commission (UGC) approval, a high-level delegation led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience), Professor Guy Littlefair is visiting Delhi, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, and Chennai. The visit aims to progress plans for establishment of campuses, engage with government and state agencies, and create an ecosystem of partnerships with Indian institutions, industry leaders, and business communities.
UWA is co-creating its India footprint in close collaboration with industry to ensure relevance, impact, and mutual value. These collaborations underscore UWA’s commitment to building a future-focused education ecosystem aligned with India’s development priorities. Recent initiatives include partnerships with Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) ****to promote engagement in health and medical science through internships and immersion experiences; Avid Sports to build pathways in sports science, business, and high-performance disciplines; HCLTech to integrate industry-led innovation models into UWA’s academic offerings.
“India, home to the world’s largest youth population, over 371 million people aged 15 to 29, is a digitally native, entrepreneurial and globally connected generation driving innovation and growth. With one of the world’s most vibrant start-up ecosystems, India is translating research into real-world impact. UWA’s expansion is designed to harness this energy, learn from it, and contribute to it through world-class research, teaching, and industry partnerships. By establishing campuses in Mumbai and Chennai, India’s hubs of innovation and growth, we are embedding UWA at the heart of the nation’s future,” added Professor Littlefair.
In parallel, UWA is strengthening its academic bridge between India and Western Australia by developing clear pathways for students. Early offer programs are now available for WACE schools in India, supported by partnerships with leading institutions including IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, RMK Group of Institutions, and DY Patil University. Deep-rooted relationships with trusted education agents across India further ensure a smooth transition for students pursuing international education at UWA.
UWA’s upcoming India campuses are also envisioned as hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship. These sites will host start-up launchpads, collaborative research centres, and cross-border incubation programs fostering bi-national ecosystems that bring together researchers, students, and industry partners from both India and Western Australia. Through its School of Earth and Oceans, UWA is collaborating with premier Indian institutions to advance research in sustainable mining, renewable energy, climate change, and ocean science.
A critical enabler of these ambitions is improved connectivity. UWA continues to advocate for direct flights between Perth and major Indian cities such as Mumbai and Chennai, which are essential to facilitate two-way mobility for students, faculty, and researchers. This connectivity will support academic exchanges, joint research, industry engagement, immersion programs at the Perth campus and internships. In addition, this will also strengthen tourism, trade, and people-to-people ties in alignment with broader government priorities.
“Inspired by India’s National Education Policy, supported by Australia’s India Economic Strategy, and backed by the Western Australian Government’s long-standing presence in Mumbai and Chennai, UWA is uniquely positioned to deepen institutional ties and unlock new opportunities for collaboration,” added Professor Littlefair.
With its bold expansion into India, UWA is not only delivering world-class education across borders, but also building lasting partnerships that will shape the future of education, research, and innovation between India and Australia.
