Student Advising

The Student Experience Team is your first point of contact for general questions about student life. We can help you to understand your course structure, provide support for academic progression, and connect you with the right support services.
Academic advice
The Student Experience Team can provide advice on a range of academic matters, including helping you to understand:
- course and unit requirements
- enrolment and unit selection
- assessment and examination processes
- academic progression requirements
- academic integrity expectations
- fees and scholarships
- how to find the right support services.
We encourage you to seek advice as early as possible to help you stay on track and make informed decisions about your studies.
Course and study planning
UWA courses are made up of units, majors and qualifications that build progressively from undergraduate to postgraduate study.
Course planning helps you to balance your workload, complete your course requirements, and understand what is required to graduate.
The UWA Handbook is a great place to start and has details about the structure of your course, including unit details and course rules.
For tailored course planning, the Student Experience Team can help you with:
- understanding your course requirements
- developing a study plan
- selecting units for upcoming teaching periods
- reviewing prerequisite requirements
- managing your study load
- planning for approved leave or a return to study
- understanding course transfer options.
Another important part of course planning is considering your future career. The sooner you start taking steps to plan for your career, the better! Explore our Career Support page for more information.

A study plan maps the units you plan to take throughout your degree. Sample study plans for specific courses and blank study plan templates are available.
Progression support
Your academic progress is reviewed at the end of each semester or trimester to determine your eligibility to continue in your course. If you have not made satisfactory progress, your enrolment may be subject to conditions, or you may be suspended or excluded from your course.
If you are concerned about your academic performance, seek support early by reaching out to the Student Experience Team. Support may include:
- discussing progression outcomes and conditions
- developing a plan to get back on track
- referrals to academic skills support
- referrals to other support services, including wellbeing support
- information about review and appeal processes where applicable.
Referrals
If you need support but are unsure where to start, reach out to the Student Experience Team. We can help to connect you with the right support, including:
- academic skills support to help you develop skills in writing, researching, time management, and referencing
- accessibility support to provide reasonable academic adjustments if you are affected by disability, medical conditions, mental health conditions, neurodiversity, or temporary conditions (e.g. illness or injury)
- wellbeing support and confidential counselling
- careers and employability services for career planning and professional development
- incident, complaints or grievances support.
Referrals can be made by the Student Experience Team, academic staff, or at your own request. Any referral will be discussed with you, and you will be supported throughout the process.
