Assessment Information

Assessments are designed to help you demonstrate your understanding of course content, develop critical thinking skills, and apply knowledge in practical and professional contexts.

Assessment requirements and student responsibilities

The University’s approach to assessment is guided by the University Policy on Assessment (UP15/5).

You can find assessment requirements for your units in the Unit Outline in the Learning Management System (LMS). Assessments may include assignments, reports, presentations, quizzes, examinations, group projects, or other learning activities. You should review assessment requirements at the start of each unit.

As a student, you are responsible for:

• understanding the assessment requirements for each unit you are enrolled in
• meeting all assessment deadlines
• following submission instructions
• submitting original work that reflects your own learning
• staying up to date with communications from academic staff regarding assessment updates or changes
• seeking support if you experience difficulties.

If exceptional circumstances affect your ability to complete an assessment, you may be eligible to apply for an extension or another approved assessment variation. Refer to exceptional variation of assessment (EVA) for further information.

Submission requirements

All assessment tasks must be submitted by the specified due date and time using the submission method outlined in the Unit Outline in the Learning Management System (LMS).

When submitting assessments, make sure you:

• follow all instructions regarding format, word count, referencing style, and the submission process
• upload files that are complete, readable, and in the required format
• retain copies of all submitted work and submission receipts
• check that you have uploaded the correct version of your assessment before the deadline
• include all required declarations or acknowledgements, where applicable.

Failure to follow submission requirements may affect the marking of your assessment or result in the work being considered not submitted.

Late penalties

You are expected to submit assessment items by the published due date and time.

If you submit an assessment after the deadline without an approved extension or assessment variation, late penalties may apply. Consistent with UWA assessment practices, assessments submitted late may incur a deduction of 5% of the total available mark per calendar day, with penalties applied after the approved grace period. 

Work submitted more than 7 days after the due date may not be accepted and may receive a mark of zero unless you have an approved extension or assessment accommodation through the exceptional variation of assessment (EVA) process.

If exceptional circumstances impact your ability to meet an assessment deadline, seek assistance and submit a request for exceptional variation of assessment (EVA) as early as possible.
