Review and Appeal Academic Decisions

The University of Western Australia logo featuring a black swan and an open book with 'Seek Wisdom' motto.

UWA India provides a pathway for students to request a review of academic decisions relating to them. If dissatisfied with the outcome of the review, students may also submit an appeal.

Academic decisions include:

  • assessment outcomes
  • final Grades/Marks for a unit
  • progress status
  • other decisions related to academic matters, such as requests for approved leave and exceptional variation of assessment (including deferred examinations).

Reviews

For academic decisions, other than progress status, students should discuss any concerns regarding the decision with the original decision-maker in the first instance.

Should concerns about the academic decision remain following this step and grounds for review as per the University’s Policy exist, a student may submit a request for the academic decision to be reviewed. Review requests must be submitted within 10 University Working Days (UWDs) from the day after the official release of the academic decision.

Assessment outcome
A request for review of an assessment outcome may only be made when the assessment has a weighting of 20% or more or is a failed component. Grounds for review are:
  1. Irregularity in marking standard; or
  2. Errors of marking process in determining the outcome of an assessment.
Grounds for review do not include circumstances where the student disagrees with the academic judgement of assessors or when a different mark would have resulted in a higher final grade for the unit.
Final Grade/Mark for a unit
A request for review of a final grade/mark may only be made on the ground of:
  1. Procedural errors in the determination of the grade or mark.
A review of a final grade/mark cannot include a review of an individual assessment outcome.
Other academic decisions
Examples of other academic decisions where a request for review can be made include official outcomes of an application for an exceptional variation of assessment, advanced standing, or leave. The grounds for review are:
  1. The original decision has not been made in accordance with relevant University Statute, regulation, rule or policy; or
  2. The original decision was not fair or reasonable.
Progress status
Students will be informed about any reasons for changes to their progress status. A student may request a review of their progress status on the following grounds:
  1. Progress status has not been assigned in accordance with the rules for the course; or
  2. Mitigating circumstances relating to the student’s unsatisfactory academic progress have not been adequately taken into account.

What to include in a request for review

A request for review needs to include the following information:

  • type of review being requested (e.g. Assessment Outcome Review)
  • the ground for the review request
  • evidence of the steps taken to resolve the concern informally (with the exception of a request for progress status review)
  • evidence to support the grounds for review that clearly demonstrates the basis of the review application.

For progress status review requests, students should:

  • identify the reason for unsatisfactory progress
  • demonstrate that the issues affecting academic progress are resolved/are being resolved
  • show commitment to their studies and that there is a reasonable prospect of making satisfactory progress should re-enrolment be allowed
  • not include any photographic evidence that is graphic/distressing in nature when submitting evidence.

Appealing the outcome of a review

A student may submit an appeal if they are dissatisfied with the outcome of that review and grounds for appeal as per the University’s Policy exist. Appeals must be submitted within 10 University Working Days (UWDs) from the day after review outcome receipt via the instructions on the outcome letter.

Grounds for Appeal

Grounds for appeal for all academic decision review outcomes include:

  1. The review process has been procedurally irregular or unfair; or
  2. New information has become available that could not have been provided at the review stage, and in all likelihood would have affected the review outcome.

For review outcomes related to progress status and academic decisions other than assessment outcomes or final grade/mark for a unit, grounds for appeal also include:

  1. A penalty has been applied as a consequence of an academic decision that is excessive, harsh or inappropriate.

How to submit

Students should contact their Student Services and Success Advisor via student-experience@india.uwa.edu.au for advice about how to submit a request for review or appeal and the information and evidence that needs to be included.
